We had the missionaries over for dinner this week and we had the best conversation with one of the Elders. We were talking to them about Isabelle and Kabuki Syndrome and one Elder started asking a ton of excited, technical questions, which made me think he was either interested in medicine or knew someone with a similar genetic syndrome. Well, I was right. He started telling us about his 10 year old brother who also has a rare genetic syndrome, called Williams Syndrome. It also affects his health and development. He was just smiling so big as he talked about his little brother, how happy he is all the time, how he will never be able to live independently and how he hoped someday his brother would be able to live with him and he could take care of him. His brother has also gone through years of therapy and as a result, the Elder wants to study to be an Occupational Therapist after his mission. He told us how his family always says that his brother got the "happy gene" because he is so happy all the time, much like Isabelle. Anyway, it was just so sweet hearing how much he loved his brother and wanted to take care of him and help him. When they left I just kept thinking, I hope Eli grows up to be just like that Elder.
